Sudanese Family Support Service

Service objectives
The Sudanese Family Support Service supports families from Southern Sudan and other marginalised areas to settle into Australia by providing them with a variety of support services.

The services provided include:

  • Outreach Playgroups
  • Parents as Teachers (PAT)
  • Casework

Outreach Playgroups
Playgroups are run in partnership with other organisations in a variety of settings across Sydney including families' homes, schools and community centres.

Playgroups are for children aged 0-5years, as well as for their parents and carers.

Children like playgroup because they can:

  • Participate in new experiences
  • Develop and increase their social skills
  • Learn sharing, co-operation and simple routines
  • Interact with other adults and children in a safe environment
  • Learn more about their world in a fun way

Adults like playgroup because they can:

  • Meet other local families and develop new friendships
  • Relax and talk in a friendly environment
  • Share experiences and ideas
  • Play with children and nurture a spirit of co-operation
  • Take up opportunities for personal development

Parents as Teachers (PAT)
Parents as Teachers (PAT) is a parent education and family support program serving families throughout pregnancy until their child enters kindergarten, usually at age 5.

Parents are supported by PAT certified parent educators, who are trained to translate scientific information on early brain development into specific when, what, how and why advice for families.

By understanding what to expect during each stage of development, parents can easily capture the teachable moments in everyday life to enhance their child's language development, intellectual growth, social development and motor skills.

Casework
General case work is provided to families participating in the outreach playgroups and the PAT home visiting program.

Families needing crisis casework and a case management plan are referred to appropriate agencies.
