Discover & Learn Program
The Discover & Learn (D&L) program within the Early Learning
Centre is a unique and innovative way to provide children with the best opportunity to settle into routines and build upon developmental skills.
The program caters for nine children per day with a diagnosis or characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Children aged 2–6 years may participate in the program. D&L supports children in working towards developmental goals as identified in their Individual Education Plan (IEP), which is developed in collaboration with families.
The team includes a full-time Early Childhood Teacher, Occupational Therapist, and trained childcare staff that have extensive training in the areas of disability, challenging behaviours, and working with children with ASD.
Staff ratios of three to one are in operation for the duration of the service hours. The proximity of D&L to the mainstream rooms allows for many integration opportunities and for children and staff to move from one environment to the other without leaving the premises.
D&L incorporates a range of interventions including behavioural, sensory, and development and learning therapy interventions.
All children must start in the Discover & Learn Prep Program
to determine their suitability for the extended day program. There is no automatic progression from D&L to the Peers & Play program (P&P). P&P has a separate eligibility criteria.
Discover & Learn Prep Program
A 10 week program designed to introduce children to the D&L program. Children are given the opportunity to participate in the morning activities which allow them to slowly settle into the daily routine. Through this process, staff are able to observe and assess the child’s suitablility for the full D&L program.
